Recently published result of online survey, conducted by well known journal “Nature”, has shown that every fifth reader used stimulants of brain activity. The primary audience of the aforementioned magazine are people, belonging to the scientific community.
The survey involved 1,400 people from 60 countries. The study found out that 62 % of respondents took methylphenidate ( “Ritalin” ) , 44 % – Modafinil ( “Provigil”), and 15% expressed a preference for beta – blockers. Many of the respondents used more drugs at once.
Also, those people reported that in addition to the above-mentioned drugs, they took Adderall (mixed amphetamines for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), dextroamphetamine sulfate, Meclofenoxate, piracetam and some dietary supplements, including ginkgo and omega-3 fatty acids.
Somewhat unexpected was the fact, that according to the survey, the frequency of drugs use to stimulate the brain does not depend on age. Previously it was thought that mostly young people, aged 18-25 years, were able to take such meds.
The main reason, why the respondents have taken these tablets, is to improve concentration. Some respondents are taking them daily, others – not more than once a week or month, someone – only once a year. Approximately half of the respondents noted the presence of side effects, which include nervous fever and headaches. However, the appearance of these troubles have little effect on the frequency of use of these stimulants.
Nearly 80% of respondents believe that healthy adults may take drugs to stimulate brain activity.
Nevertheless, 89% of respondents are for limitation of the same drugs to be taken by adolescents under 16 years of age.
69 % of participants do not mind the risk of tolerable side effects.
Methylphenidate – a drug, used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – is popular among students who use it to increase the volume of studied material, preparing for exams.
Modafinil has been designed to deal with a great variety of sleep disorders. Its properties are often used to combat fatigue or to facilitate the well-being after a flight, which is accompanied by a change of time zones.
Beta blockers relieve anxiety and help with angina and hypertension.
